Co-op revamps double squash to reduce packaging
The Co-operative Group is set to reduce the packaging of its own-brand cordial range by around 40% by moving from ordinary to double concentrate squash.
The supermarket giant said that the move from ordinary to double concentrate will not affect the taste or quality of the squash, but will save 83 tonnes of packaging weight a year – equivalent to the weight of over 18 African elephants. This, in turn, will save 337 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The roll out of the concentrated cordial range, which includes family favourites such as summer fruits, orange and apple & blackcurrant, follows the launch of The Co-operative’s groundbreaking Ethical Operating Plan, which includes the toughest operational carbon reduction targets of any major business.
Since 2006, The Co-operative has reduced its own operational carbon emissions by 20% and aims to increase this to 35% by 2017 – the most progressive of any major UK business – as part of the Ethical Plan. Additionally, The Co-operative has achieved a 15% weight reduction in packaging, and aims to reduce the environmental impact by a further 10% by 2012.
The initiative on cordials follows other recent packaging moves from The Co-operative, including the conversion of its own-brand standard olive oil range from glass to plastic, and lightweighting the glass on its popular own-brand Californian wine range last year.
The Co-operative Food environment manager Iain Ferguson saud: “We are always looking for ways to reduce packaging and help our customers reduce waste.”
