Benson brings pharma know-how to chewing gum pack

Benson Group's Medica division has created the packaging for range of chewing gum that contains a dispenser for papers to ensure the product is disposed of correctly.

Medica has manufactured a cartonboard sliding pack for Peppersmith gum that has a fifth "side" to the shell that houses a booklet of sheets that is being supplied by Denny Bros.

As well as the primary packaging, Medica has also produced the shelf-display unit and both printed with embossing and spot UV coating for a quality feel. All materials are FSC certified.

B&B Studio created the graphics for the packaging and creative partner Shaun Bowen said the design carried on the Peppersmith name that captures the "Englishness and artisan feel of the product".

"We've had great fun disrupting its seriousness with our moustache icon that carries across into broader brand communications," he said.

Peppersmith co-founder Mike Stevens said he was impressed with Medica's desire to accommodate the company's requirements.

"They have delivered a great solution and now the fun really starts as we introduce the pack to market," he said.

Benson Group managing director Mark Kerridge said: "Whilst the plant is normally associated with pharmaceutical packaging production, Medica has the equipment suited to tipping on the booklets that are used to wrap and throw away the used gum."

Peppersmith gum is made from the sap of the sapodilla tree from the Central American Rainforest and contains no artificial flavours or preservatives.

Stevens and co-founder Dan Shrimpton met while working as part of the start up team at Innocent Drinks.
