Gold, leather and mahogany for ultra-exclusive whisky pack

Design agency The Core has revealed what could be the most expensive pack of the year - a whisky bottle and presentation case featuring 24-carat gold, real leather and solid mahogany.

The London-based agency has created the ultra-exclusive pack for scotch whisky brand Ballantine's for a special blend created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Ballantine's golf tournament.

Just 20 of the packs, which are currently on display around the world, have been produced. They feature 24-carat gold foil-blocking for the text, while the bottle's collar, which is also gold-plated, is engraved and sealed with wax.

A solid-mahogany presentation box features an embossed leather frontispiece and was inspired by antique leather golf caddies.

The Core design director Andy Atkins said: "We sourced high-end materials and manufacturers that use traditional crafts like leatherwork and cabinet-making to reflect the brand's heritage. We managed the manufacturing process ourselves to ensure quality."

One of the packs has already been presented to the tournament's first winner, while a second will be given to the winner of this year's Championship which takes place in Korea next month.

Ballantine's is owned by Pernod Ricard's whisky business, Chivas Brothers.
