Cans for Causes Program to raise money for handicap-accessible home for soldier

Aluminum Association effort contributes to charity for severely-injured veterans

-- Packaging Digest, 2/17/2010 5:40:09 PM

Aluminum canStephanie McGee of Stafford, Virginia joined the Aluminum Association’s Cans for Causes program to help raise money for Homes for Our Troops, a national non-profit organization that assists severely injured veterans by building specialty adapted, handicap-accessible homes designed to accommodate the veteran’s disabilities. McGee volunteers with the organization. She is a military wife and has two brothers in the Armed Forces.

“I think recycling through Cans for Causes is a great way for everyone to get involved with fundraising for charities,” said McGee. “The Aluminum Association makes it so easy by providing the bins and liners. All you have to do is collect the cans and turn them in! I plan on setting up the bins at my office, at other local businesses and at the homes of my friends and neighbors.”

McGee is currently raising money for a soldier in her area of Fairfax County, Virginia. Marine Sgt. Steven Kiernan was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq when he lost both of his legs in May 2008. Sgt. Kiernan and his team were hit by an IED. Lifesaving measures were applied as he received care in Germany, Bethesda Naval Hospital and eventually Walter Reed hospital where he continues to receive physical therapy. CANS for CAUSES is a domestic program sponsored by the Aluminum Association to support organizations in their recycle efforts by providing free bin and bin liners. For more information visit www.aluminum.org.
