Sanner launches new 'senior-friendly' packaging closures
2016-07-27

Participants required approximately a third of the time to open the FOG 27 closure from Sanner GmbH.

German firm Sanner GmbH has unveiled new packaging which it claims only uses a third of the effort to open.

The new FOG 27 closure is for nutritional supplements such as vitamins or minerals, and has aimed to make opening easier for older users.

According to a study by the German Federal Association of Senior Citizens‘ Organization, more than 90 percent of senior citizens struggle with opening consumer packaging, while three-quarters of users criticized the handling properties of opening mechanisms in particular.

But following a test on the new FOG 27 closure conducted by the market research institutes Quo Vadis and Packaging Intelligence, which surveyed 120 people who purchase and consume vitamin, mineral or painkiller tablets up to three times a month, 87 percent confirmed the product was easier to open, Sanner claimed.

Participants required approximately a third of the time to open the FOG 27 — 9.2 instead of 25.8 seconds — while the amount of physical effort needed was reduced to 12 newtons from 36 newtons.

“For producers of food supplements this is a decisive factor,” said Ursula Hahn, product manager at Sanner. “In the case of bad experiences with the packaging, repurchase rates decline considerably.”
