TheMedi-CRREO Child-Resistant Pouch was two years in development.

Making a pouch both easy to-open and child-proof is quite an undertaking, but the development launched last November during an innovation-heavy Pack Expo (see First child-resistant slider for flex packs launched) was recently recognized with a 2015 DuPont Award for Packaging Innovation for Pactech Packaging–USA and Presto Products Co, a division of Reynolds. The two vendors partnered to develop the Medi-CRREO Child-Resistant (CR) Pouch that features a slider-based closure that has passed the testing requirements set forth in Title 16 CFR 1700 of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA).

The development advances the use of CR techniques from traditional rigid containers to flexible packaging including barrier structures. Markets include consumer products, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products and household chemicals.

Pouch sizes range from 8.5 in. x 5 in to 13.5in. x 18in. with or without a stand-up gusset; the package size  is scalable. This allows end user’s to keep a consistent look of their package while right-sizing it for the product.

The award entry cites the many benefits of flexible packaging that this innovation offers in a CR format from a reduction in product and package waste and the amount of space required in inventory and in landfills; the pouch can also be reused by consumers.

Our from-Pack Expo report noted that the pouch was two years in development and is said to integrate with existing packaging equipment.

It was honored by DuPont Awards judges for Excellence in Technological Advancement and Enhanced User Experience.
