The UK has recorded 6% increase in plastic bottle recovery in the past year according to preliminary survey data from sector body Recoup.
Recoup's 2010 UK Household Plastics Packaging Collection Survey will be published next month and is expected to show that 260,000 tonnes of plastic bottles were collected in 2009.
The 45% collection rate is a 6% increase on last year's survey and Recoup said more than 215,000 tonnes were collected from kerbside.
Recoup senior project manager Marcel Arsand said: "We are encouraged that there appears to be positive and steady progress in the UK, a reflection of the good work that all of those involved in local authority and waste management sectors.
"And, of course, consumers are playing their part and recognising the importance of recycling."
The report also shows that 40,000 tonnes of mixed, non-bottle plastics had been collected in 2009.
