Industry Overview
The French market for packaging machinery was $818 million in 2005. France is the 2nd largest market [Germany 1st] for packaging machinery in Europe, followed by the UK and Italy. The packaging industry accounted for 3.5 % of French manufacturing output. The growth in the packaging industry is mainly driven by the food and personal care sectors. The total packaging industry is primarily comprised of 70 small and medium-sized companies that are highly specialized. The French market is currently characterized by increasing demand for flexible, versatile, automated and integrated machinery, as well as increased demand for eco-friendly equipment.

France’ total domestic production was valued at $625 million in 2005. France was ranked the 6th largest producer of packaging machinery worldwide. 40% of French exports are for EU markets, whilst 25 % go to North America, 15 % to Asia-Pacific, and the remaining to North Africa, South America, and Central Europe.

France is moderately receptive to import and a very large share of it is from Europe. France relies heavily on machinery imports, accounting for more than 55 % of the overall French market. Overall packaging machinery import topped $630 million in 2005. Packaging material import reached over $5 billion. Germany and Italy are the major suppliers to the French market. Major suppliers of packaging material to France are Germany, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
