In 2005, the food and packaging machinery industries in Germany achieved a total industrial output valued at €4.7 billion, a growth of 2.4%. The total packaging industry is comprised of some 700 small and medium-sized companies. Germany is the world’s largest exporter of packaging machinery. About 80% of packaging machinery and equipment is exported annually. This country reached a 25% of world market share of packaging machinery exports in 2005, followed by Italy, the US, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
The demand for packaging machinery and equipment is growing worldwide. Experts estimate that international trade in the market segment rises by 4%-5% every year. The value of packaging machinery and equipment in the global market constituted over €27 billion in 2005. German manufacturers of packaging machinery and equipment accounted for 25% of global world exports. The export of packaging machinery production has been growing in Asia. Following the EU and the rest of Europe, US market is the third largest market for German packaging machinery exporters.
Imports of packaging machinery to Germany reached €670 million in 2005, with US imports standing at 6.6%. Major suppliers of packaging machinery to Germany were Italy, Switzerland, the UK and the Netherlands.
The technology in the automation of food production, processing, and packaging are growing rapidly globally. In developed countries like Germany, continuing replacement or investments on the latest machinery ensure to a stable demand for capital goods including packaging machinery.
