Industry Overview
China – A Booming Economy, A Great Market
In 2005, the national food industry achieved a total industrial output value of RMB 2.03 trillion [1 dollar = 7.97 RMB], thus accounting for 8.2% of the national industrial output and having grown by 26.9%. Various types of food with different levels of quality, grades, functions, and packaging meet the needs of different types of consumers. The market share of the developing instant food, snack, health food, and green food sectors continues to expand. The market demand for beverages, staple and non-staple food, quick-freeze food, cooked food, seasonings, bean products, and other fancy food is rising rapidly.

Nowadays, the food-processing industry in China once again shows a strong growth, especially with regard to beer, beverages, dairy products, edible vegetable oil, slaughtering and meat processing, fruit and nut processing, grain milling and sugar processing, and other fields. This rapid development has brought about a tremendous market demand for the processing and packaging industries, which grow by 18-30% per year.

As the world’s second largest importer of packaging machinery, China’s food processing and packaging industry reached an output value of RMB 650 billion in 2005, with an average annual growth rate of 12%; food processing and packaging machinery imports rose to about RMB 20 million, with an average annual growth rate of 10%. It is expected that, in 2010, China’s total market demand for food and packaging machinery will reach RMB 110 billion, including RMB 25 billion from the import business.

At present, only 5% of China’s food processing and packaging machinery comply with the foreign standards of the 1990s, while 20% are still on the level of the 1980s and 60% on the level of the 1970s. Compared with Western countries, Chinese food processing and packaging machinery shows 30-40% less variety and lags 20-30 years behind on a technical level.

In the years to come, China will focus on the development of the following fields of food processing and packaging technology:
Dairy Machinery
- UHT sterilizing equipment, aseptic filling systems, pre-processing equipment
Beverage Machinery
- Aseptic cold/hot product filling lines, fully automatic beverage mixing systems, pre-processing equipment
Brewing Machinery
- Computer-controlled technology, macromolecule materials, Blow-Fill-Seal [BFS] equipment
Meat Processing Machinery
- Fully automatic vacuum cutting and mixing machines, fillers, injectors, packaging machines, integrated processing equipment for splanchna, blood, skin, bones, and glands of poultry and livestock
Instant Food Machinery
- Instant noodles, instant rice noodles, convenient congee, instant rice and snack processing equipment
Seasoning Machinery
- Bioengineering technology, membrane technology
