Tesco trials Dairy Crest milk in bags

Tesco is trialling milk in plastic bags as producer Dairy Crest highlighted strong sales growth in the format.

In an interim management statement, Dairy Crest said it had invested in improving efficiencies at its dairies and was "making good progress" in liquid milk sales.

The firm said that, in particular, sales of milk in bags with the Jugit container were growing strongly.

"In addition to national distribution to Sainsbury's we have started a trial with Tesco and are also increasing sales to our doorstep customers," Dairy Crest said in the statement.

Tesco told Packaging News that the trials were for Dairy Crest branded milk, rather than its own products.

"We are currently trialling the Dairy Crest Country Life milk bags in a small number of our stores," a spokeswoman said.

Bagged milk has proven to be successful at Sainsbury's but Waitrose decided to withdraw the format saying it was not popular with customers and led to increased product waste.

Dairy Crest chief executive Mark Allen said the firm's performance in the first part of the year was in line with objectives.

"Dairy Crest continues to benefit from being a broadly based business," he said.

The Jugit container is produced by plastic packaging manufacturer RPC.
