Sealed Air offers fresh red meat packaging system
2013-12-04

PackagingNews

Sealed Air has announced the development of Cryovac Mirabella, its latest packaging system which is said to simultaneously preserve freshness and resources

Cryovac Mirabella is a film and foam or rigid tray combination that facilitates operational efficiency for fresh red meat producers and differentiation for retailers. The red colouring is retained without the use of additives.

A reduction in tray height of around 40%, compared with average tray lidding, complements the visual appeal with cost and environmental benefits while retaining the MAP pack appearance.

The system incorporates technology that enables the meat to breathe and keep its bright appearance. Two layers of film are applied together – the bottom one is permeable to oxygen, the top one the barrier. The shelf life is comparable to other modified atmosphere solutions, with the crucial difference being the elimination of discolouring, meaning that less meat is thrown away by the retailer due to the film being in contact with the meat.

Cryovac Mirabella film is thin, high barrier and has antifog properties.

Already in the production phase, this  system shows itself to be compatible with a range of tray lidding machines and can process up to 80 packages per minute.

According to Sealed Air – who also say the packaging’s sealability and pack security make a contribution to improving food safety – the benefits of a reduction of tray size amounting to around 25% already demonstrate a positive financial and environmental impact during transportation with less van and truck volume necessary.

The US company also points out that reduced dimensions lead to economies in display and refrigerator space, as well as a cut in the quantity of waste material in the consumer’s kitchen.
