Asda has rolled out new lightweight water bottles, linking up with PET supplier

The supermarket giant has taken out 1g on the 500ml and 5.5g on the 2 litre bottles of Highland Spring and Eden Falls brands. Asda is also set to carry out further work to lightweight the 5 litre bottle. According to Asda, the lightweighted bottles could potentially save the supermarket 140 tonnes of PET a year.

Suzie Hardy, senior packaging development manager at Asda said: “This is a great example of when lightweighting isn’t just about stripping out materials. The new bottles look more elegant by design, are structurally stronger, easier to use, and save space on pallets and in store. They’re an all round winner.”

As well as APPE, Asda linked up with a bottle designer in France. The new bottles come off the back of a record breaking year for Asda’s bottled water sales.
