Arla achieves 15% recycled content for milk bottles

Arla has set its sights on 20% recycled content for milk bottles after revealing that all its fresh milk and Cravendale bottles now contain 15% recycled plastic.

Dairy Arla said that the increased use of recycled plastic in its polybottles was the equivalent of a 3,200-tonne annual carbon reduction.

Packaging manager Richard Taplin said it was a “significant step forwards” to achieving internal carbon reduction goals as well as contributing to Courtauld 2 and Milk Roadmap targets.

“Our focus is now on how to deliver 20% recycled plastic in our packaging and beyond,” said Taplin.

The news comes a month after plastic bottle manufacturer Nampak announced it was looking to trial milk bottles with a 30% recycled content.

As well as moves to increase the recycled content of its packaging, Arla has also piloted HDPE derived from sugarcane.
