Tesco introduces new label for 'at-a-glance' health information

Tesco is introducing new labelling to highlight 700 healthier products among its own-brand food ranges.

Tesco said that the products would display a logo that highlights the product's key nutritional benefit, for example '1 of 5 a day' and 'low salt', from this month.

The roundel design will be silver or black on the Finest range, green on standard ranges and blue on the Value lines to complement Tesco's overall packaging design.

Marketing director Carolyn Bradley said the aim of the new labelling was to make it easier for customers to see healthy options at a glance.

"The clear and simple design stands out on shelf and acts as a flag for customers immediately telling them whether a product has a health benefit or if it is one of the healthier products in our range," she said.

More than 200 lines, such as wholegrain cereals, reduced-fat cheeses and fibre-rich pasta, will also carry a 'wave' logo that highlights products that meet strict nutritional guidelines for fat, saturates, salt and sugar.
